Latvian Presidency Conference 2015

Healthcare Solutions to Improve Workability Conference

The Fit for Work Europe Coalition (FfW) with the Ministry of Health and Riga Stradins University, organized a conference on the 29 of April 2015 in Riga at the Conference Center “Citadele”. The conference received endorsement from the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the European Union and was co-chaired by the Ministry of Health.

The conference brought together key policy-makers and stakeholders from EU and the national level to further the debate about how chronic conditions and their societal impact can be tackled.

The conference:

  • Looked at the role of early clinical intervention in facilitating workers’ return to work;
  • Presented evidence to demonstrate how governments can work differently; and
  • Discussed new evidence  based and practical solutions to deliver better healthcare and societal outcomes over the longer-term.

MSDs are the leading cause of sickness absence affecting at least 100 million people and costs European countries up to 240 billion Euros annually.

The conference highlighted the connection between health and work in a context in which chronic conditions impose an increasingly significant burden on our healthcare systems and where new approaches throughout the continuum of care (from early prevention to recovery) are required.

FfW is a multi-stakeholder pan-European platform that brings together a diverse mix of stakeholders. Our main objective is to deliver more investment in sustainable healthcare by promoting and implementing early intervention practices in Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs). Research & real-life examples show this approach is the most effective way of ensuring people with MSDs can enter and remain in work across the EU and globally.
