Call to Action 2013

Watch the special address of Gianni Pittella, Vice-President of the European Parliament

The Fit for Work 2013 Summit was a significant milestone for presenting solutions to the growing challenges posed by chronic conditions, such as MSDs (musculoskeletal disorders). This was only possible thanks to the meaningful contributions of our speakers and members of the audience.

We are planning to turn the conclusions of the Summit into concrete outcomes that will support the sustainability of our healthcare systems and the economies across Europe and beyond. Fit for Work Europe’s mission is to bridge the gap between healthcare, finance, work and welfare to help policy-makers address several major challenges facing European societies, such as the burden of MSDs.

As shown in the latest Fit for Work Europe report and the infographic we released at the Summit, an extra one million employees could be at work each day if early interventions were more widely accessible for people with MSDs (musculoskeletal disorders).

Hence, we are calling on MEPs, MPs and policy-makers to rethink healthcare as an investment in the economy, rather than a cost. We are calling for cross-government collaboration and joined-up budgeting at the European and country levels to implement prevention and early intervention programmes for workers with chronic conditions, in particular with MSDs. We are calling for work and health to become criteria of the clinical performance because we believe that remaining in work, or returning to work, can be beneficial to the patients’ wellbeing, the society and the whole economy.
